  • 10 medium cooking apples (Golden Delicious or Jonathan)

  • 10 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter or 5 tablespoons margarine

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • 2 1/2 egg, lightly beaten

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons water

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons sugar

  • 5/8 teaspoon lemon juice, for apples in case they start to turn brown

  • 1 1/4 cups prepared caramel ice cream topping

  • 7/8 cup toasted chopped pecan halves

  • 2 1/2 to taste Cool Whip (optional)

  • 2 1/2 to taste vanilla ice cream (optional)

  • DIRECTIONS

  • 1

Dumplings

  • 2

Preheat oven to 400°F.

  • 3

Thaw and unfold puff pastry.

  • 4

On lightly floured surface, roll the pastry into a 16" square.

  • 5

Cut with a knife into 4 equal pieces.

  • 6

Peel and core apples.

  • 7

Trim the bottoms so the apples sit flat.

  • 8

Place 1 apple in the center of each square.

  • 9

Use 1/4 teaspoon of lemon juice if apples start to turn brown.

  • 10

Mix together the brown sugar, butter or margarine and cinnamon.

  • 11

Spoon into apples.

  • 12

Beat the egg and water together in a small bowl.

  • 13

Moisten the edge of the pastry with the mixture.

  • 14

Bring the pastry up around the apple, pleating the pastry as needed to form a seal.

  • 15

Place the dumplings in an ungreased 9x13 inch baking dish.

  • 16

Brush them with remaining egg mixture, sprinkle with granulated sugar.

  • 17

Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown.

  • 18

When ready to serve; heat the caramel sauce and the toasted pecans.

  • 19

Place a warm dumpling on a serving plate and drizzle the sauce over the top.

  • 20

Garnish with cool-whip or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
